Federal, State and Local Taxation

Rushton Stakely has been one of the leading tax firms in Alabama for decades. Our lawyers are heavily involved in tax planning for individual, corporate, partnership, trust, and cooperative taxpayers, as well as for public and private foundations and charities. We work closely with a wide range of clients to analyze and evaluate the tax effects of various proposed transactions – looking at federal, state, and local taxation, including tax credit and tax benefit transactions. Our lawyers plan and draft a wide variety of agreements with planned tax results.

We also represent taxpayers in disputes with the Internal Revenue Service and the Alabama Department of Revenue from the audit level through appeals as well as in litigation. We represent tax clients in state and federal courts as well as before the United States Tax Court and the Court of Claims.

In addition, our tax lawyers advise business clients in such areas as state income tax, privilege tax, sales tax, ad valorem property tax, gross receipts tax, and various excise and license taxes. We review and draft tax legislation for a variety of clients including business trade associations. In this regard, our tax lawyers have been responsible for drafting various pieces of legislation relating to business and taxation matters of a state and local nature. We work with clients on matters concerning city and county taxes of all descriptions.
