Mr. Tyson joined the firm in 1982 and became a shareholder in 1986. He has over thirty years of experience litigating a wide range of civil cases throughout the state. His practice is primarily devoted to the defense of physicians, hospitals, nurses and other healthcare professionals in medical malpractice cases. He also handles other complex litigation matters such as legal and other professional liability cases.

Mr. Tyson has been recognized by his peers on numerous occasions for his outstanding trial skills. He is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, having served as president of the Alabama Chapter (2009–2010). He has been repeatedly selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® and Alabama Super Lawyers. He has been AV rated in Martindale Hubbell for almost twenty years.

Obtained transfer of venue in a wrongful death medical malpractice case against hospital after appeal to the Alabama Supreme Court

Secured defense verdict for family medicine doctor in medical malpractice case involving alleged failure to diagnose and treat a defect involving thoracic aorta

Secured directed verdict for pulmonary medicine specialist in a wrongful death medical malpractice case arising out of the prescription of several allegedly inappropriate medications to a patient who had been diagnosed with congestive obstructive pulmonary disease

Obtained defense verdict for a psychiatrist in a case involving allegations that the psychiatrist violated the standard of care in the method of disposal of an office computer containing personal health data

Secured defense verdict for pediatrician in a case involving the death of a minor from meningitis

Received summary judgment in favor of a hospital in a wrongful death case involving open heart surgery

Obtained defense verdict in favor of pediatrician and pediatric group in medical malpractice case involving alleged failure to make timely diagnosis of developmental hip dysplasia

Honors and Awards

Mr. Tyson is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), and was the 2009–2010 president of its Alabama chapter. He is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers and currently serves as a member of the Alabama State Committee.  He has been selected for inclusion on the lists of Alabama Super Lawyers (2009, 2010, 2012, 2013) and The Best Lawyers in America® (2005–2013). He has been AV peer review rated by Martindale-Hubbell for over 20 years.

Best Lawyers, the oldest and most respected peer-review publication in the legal profession, has named Mr. Tyson as the “2013 Montgomery Medical Malpractice Law Lawyer of the Year”. The lawyers being honored as “Lawyers of the Year” have received particularly high ratings in the publication's surveys by earning a high level of respect among their peers for their abilities, professionalism, and integrity.

Presentations

Mr. Tyson is a former Huntingdon College instructor on legal aspects of hospital administration. He has also presented many lectures to professional groups on medical malpractice, risk management, loss prevention and other medical/legal issues.

Community Involvement

Mr. Tyson is a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church where he has served several terms on the vestry.  He is a member of the President’s Cabinet for the University of Alabama and has served on the board for Hospice of Montgomery and the YMCA Metro Board for many years.
